  • When worn overnight, the lenses induce hydraulic forces in a closed eyelid environment to compress the central epithelial fluid, causing the fluid to move from the central area of compression to the mid-peripheral portion of the cornea.

The amount of compression needed to correct your prescription is calculated according to your corneal shape and prescription.

  • For full correction, the average treatment period is 7-14 days.

On average, the first night of treatment will correct 50% of the patient’s original prescription.

Example: If your prescription is a -4.00D, you should be around a -2.00D the next morning.

  • Corneal changes are caused by the cellular fluid transfer between channels in the epithelium (top layer of the cornea).

When ortho-k lens wear is discontinued, the fluids will return to their original position and the cornea will revert back to it’s original shape, along with the regression of myopia correction.

  • If you have residual correction a few years after surgery, you may be a candidate for ortho-k to help correct the remaining amount.

Factors depend on corneal shape and amount of myopia to correct. Contact us for a consultation if you are interested in your options.

  • We recommend 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

To maintain the effect of reduction in prescription, overnight lens wear must be continued on a prescribed schedule.

  • People who:

    • Have a strong motivation to be glasses-free

    • Want to wake up and see clearly

    • Find glasses inconvenient to wear at work or school

    • Find glasses restrictive for participating in sports or other activities

    • Have an active lifestyle

    • Work in dusty or windy environments

    • Have not been happy with soft contact lens wear

  • Ortho-k fitting varies on the prescription and corneal curvature.

Patients who are less than -6.00D are candidates with less than 1.75D of astigmatism.

  • There are no age restrictions by the FDA to wear ortho-k.

We have patients as young as 4 years old wearing the lenses with the parents assisting in application and removal. We also have adults up to 80 years old continuing to enjoy their lens wear.

  • Parents can have complete supervision of their children wearing these lenses at night.

Depending on the child’s age and maturity, parents can apply lenses at bedtime and remove during the morning. Of course, we encourage children to also take responsibility for their lenses but parents are able to monitor all lens wear from home.

  • We will assess the patient's suitability for ortho-k lens wear including lifestyle, visual needs, and expectations.

In-office measurements require specialized testing to measure the corneal curvature and prescription.

If the patient is a good candidate, we will proceed to order the lenses and prepare for the fitting process.

  • Like any contact lenses, ortho-k lenses carry some risk and potential side effects. These may include temporary discomfort of the lenses, dryness, redness of the eye, especially during the initial adjustment period.

In rare cases, corneal infection may occur if proper lens care and hygiene are not maintained. If you experience discomfort or irritation with or without the lenses, do not continue to wear ortho-k lenses. See an eye care professional to ensure the eyes are healthy.

  • Ortho-k is approved to correct up to 1.75D of astigmatism.

Ortho-k correction tends to mask up to 1/2 of astigmatism. Book a consultation appointment to see if you are a candidate.

  • No, if lens wear is discontinued, the corneal changes that occurred with wear of ortho-k will revert back to it’s original. This process can take from a couple of days to 2 weeks, depending on the length of wear of lenses.

  • Once we order your ortho-k lenses, the follow up schedule is as listed:

    • 1-Day follow-up to ensure ocular health

    • 1-week follow-up to ensure vision correction is on target or if lens modifications need to be made.

    • 1-month follow-up to ensure vision correction is on target

    • 3-month follow-up to finalize lens parameters. At this time, a spare pair of lenses can be ordered.

  • If you skip one night, you may notice that your vision is not as clear the next day.

Depending on your original prescription, some patients find that they can skip 1 night and still see clearly through the 2nd day. If you have a higher baseline prescription, you will need to wear your lenses every night to maintain effectiveness.

  • Patients with certain corneal conditions such as keratoconus, or who have had trauma to their eye are not good candidates. Patients with very high prescriptions may not be eligible for ortho-k.
