What is orthokeratology (ortho-k)?
Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) is a modern, non-surgical procedure that utilizes customized contact lenses to reshape the cornea to provide clear vision during the day. The procedure is not permanent and reversible.
“Ortho” = Latin for Straight, “Keratology” = Science of altering the corneal shape, hence the term, Orthokeratology.
Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight while sleeping, gently reshaping the eye's front surface to correct for myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism.
The idea behind ortho-k is similar to that of braces for teeth. Just as braces apply gentle pressure to the teeth to gradually move them into a better position, ortho-k lenses apply gentle hydraulic pressure to the cornea to shape the corneal shape to correct the vision.
Ortho-k lenses are made of a highly gas-permeable material that allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea, ensuring that the eye stays healthy even while the lenses are being worn.
Orthokeratology treatment is temporary. If lens wear is discontinued, the cornea will revert to its original uniform shape.

What does it cost?
Ortho-k treatment is tailored to each individual prescription, with costs ranging from $2,750 - $3,400 for the first year of treatment, including the final pair of lenses. The price variation reflects the personalized approach to individual case complexity and vision correction through specially designed contact lenses.
There is a $250 ortho-k consultation visit, which allows us to fully understand your unique eye shape and prescription for designing your custom lenses. Should you proceed with treatment within 60 days of this visit, this fee will be credited towards the total fitting cost and lenses.
Year 2 and beyond for maintenance of ortho-k lens wear cost $750 for an annual exam. If lenses need to be replaced, the costs of the lenses vary from $400-600 per lens.
How much time is involved?
Ortho-k treatment starts with data collection and lens customization, followed by 3-4 adjustment appointments in the first month. Afterward, a 6-month follow-up ensures effective vision correction maintenance throughout the year.
Ortho-k treatment typically involves an initial adaptation period of a few weeks, during which the lenses are worn nightly. After achieving the desired vision correction, patients wear the lenses regularly, usually during sleep, to maintain the effect throughout the year.
Who is a good candidate?
Individuals with mild to moderate myopia or astigmatism seeking a non-surgical alternative to improve vision
Individuals who dislike wearing glasses or daytime contact lenses
Children progressing with nearsightedness
